Who we are

We are a multi-generational family of tap dance teachers dedicated to preserving the legacy of Montreal's Queen of Rhythm Tap, Ethel Bruneau. We believe that learning tap dance is possible for everyone, regardless of age. Join us in sharing the joy of rhythm tap, rooted in jazz music and Afro-American culture.

Ethel Bruneau (1936–2023), born in Harlem, began dancing at age four and trained at the Mary Bruce School of Dance. At sixteen, she joined Cab Calloway’s jazz tour, eventually arriving in Montreal in 1953, where she embraced the city and earned her stage names “Miss Swing” and “The Queen of Tap.” A dynamic dancer, singer, comedian, and MC at Rockhead’s Paradise, she performed with major artists across North America. Specializing in Afro‑American rhythm tap, she opened her first school in 1964 and spent her life teaching, inspiring generations, and, in her words, “preaching the gospel of tap dance.”
